A Natural Solution to the Dreaded Hay Fever Season!
by Dr. Harrison Weisinger, MBBS, PhD. (Dr Harry)
Learn how you can stop suffering from hay-fever symptoms naturally. Dr. Harry discusses the cutting edge research that offers a solution for long-suffering victims of pollen and other allergens, and he also also throws in his top tips for getting through the high pollen season.
The Struggle is Real
These symptoms can range from sneezing fits and watery eyes to trouble breathing or even an asthma attack. As a result, many turn to antihistamines such as Piroteze, Clarityn and Piriton, as well as a variety of sprays and or injections. Although these might work for some, others don’t ever achieve true relief.
Some of my patients tell me that "it’s like having the flu for 4 months straight". It’s exhausting, uncomfortable and relentless - and when your head feels thick, it’s really hard to concentrate on anything. People find that the tablets dry you out and reduce the symptoms down only to just bearable. What’s even more maddening is that non-sufferers are more-or-less completely oblivious to the existence of hay fever season.
A Huge Seasonal Health Problem in the UK
If you’re one of the 18 million Britons that suffer from hay-fever, formally known as seasonal allergic rhinitis, then you know just how disabling this condition really is. Close to 3 million people have to take time off work - unable to function with their constellation of symptoms.
Solutions needed...
Hay fever season has a huge impact in the UK, and with the changes within NHS guidance for those with mild- to- moderate hay fever a few years ago, it costs citizens tens of millions of pounds in medication costs, and employers an estimated 8 billion pounds in lost productivity.
It’s no wonder that scientists have been swarming around the anti-inflammatory properties of Curcumin(extracted from Turmeric) for the treatment of hay fever.
The Science - Why Curcumin Helps With Hay Fever Symptoms
Allergic rhinitis is the result of the body’s own immune system responding to pollen and other ‘foreign’ particles - also known as allergens. Allergic rhinitis is a strong risk factor for asthma. For this reason alone, many GPs take a very proactive position in treating their patients with hay fever. In a fashion similar to the triggering of asthma, hay fever is produced by the release of ‘cytokines’ - chemicals released by certain white blood cells to signal other white blood cells and cause a local release of fluid and protein (hence the symptoms of redness, swelling, tearing and congestion).
In patients suffering from hay fever, Curcumin suppresses the release of key cytokines IL-4, IL-8, and TNF-alpha which have a direct relationship with the alleviation of nasal symptoms (sneezing and runny nose), and nasal congestion (hence improving airflow).
Top 5 Tips for Managing Hay Fever
1. Curcumin
It is now accepted that Curcumin, with its anti-inflammatory properties, helps maintain resistance to allergies, by dampening the hypersensitivity immune response to pollen and other allergens. Curcumin is 100% plant-based, being derived from the turmeric plant. Keep in mind that curcumin is the active component of turmeric (and turmeric is only 2% curcumin) - so just taking turmeric itself won’t work. It’s also important to use curcumin that has improved bioavailability, since curcumin, just like turmeric, is poorly absorbed by the body in its natural form. Truth Origins Liquid Curcumin has overcome this problem by making this product water-soluble, making it easier for curcuminoids to pass to your bloodstream.
2. Stay Inside on High Count Days & Keep the Pollen Out
I know this is easier said than done, but on days forecast to have a sky-high pollen count, you’d be better off working from home. If you have to go outside, consider using a face-mask similar to the ones used by painters and plasterers.
It’s impossible to avoid pollen completely, but you can minimise your exposure to it by keeping your windows closed and using your air conditioner (on recycle). It’s is also helpful to clean the vents regularly and use a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter.
3. Allergy Testing
It’s definitely worth considering being tested for specific allergies. Your GP can arrange this for you. I was often surprised by what some of my patients were and importantly weren't, allergic to. You just never know. The most common allergies are to pollen and grasses, but it could just be dust or dust-mites. In that case, 90% of the remedy lies in a proper Spring cleaning.
4. Anti-histamines
Antihistamines are a staple of managing seasonal allergic rhinitis. While they are similar, my patients invariably found that one was more effective than another, so it’s worth testing a few out (including generic unbranded ones). Beware that some antihistamines, like promethazine (Phenergan), cross the blood-brain barrier. In doing so it causes drowsiness (that’s what makes them so popular with hospital doctors trying to sleep during the day when on a run of night shifts!). In more severe cases, doctors may consider prescribing corticosteroids like budesonide either topically, as a spray, or in tablets.
5. Desensitisation Injections for Severe Hay Fever
This really relates to the third point. After identifying the culprit allergen or allergens, it may be possible to achieve real and lasting relief through desensitisation injections. With this, your doctor will arrange for you to receive regular injections which gradually contain more and more of the allergen. As your body becomes exposed to the allergen progressively, it learns to fight it and your allergic hypersensitivity response is gradually dampened. Unfortunately, this form of treatment can be quite expensive and may take years of regular (say monthly) injections.
