Truth Origins' Brand New Products!
Why did we choose our new ingredients?
- Written by Dr. Harrison Weisinger MBBS, Ph.D.
Our products have always been 100% plant-based, organic & water-soluble. Trent and I thought we had delivered something pretty special. But being the kind of guys that we are (always wanting to improve, and always happy to take feedback from our customers) we knew there was more we could do.
That’s why we have worked hard to fortify all of the supplements with even more health-promoting ingredients. It’s not easy (especially nowadays) to find reliable suppliers of certified plant-based vitamins, but we’ve done it. I know Trent would want to brag about it, so I’ll do it on his behalf! Here’s an update with an overview of our “new, improved” products.
Truth Origins VITALITY, SHIELD, SHINE & FOCUS
Why the addition of Vitamin D, B12, Zinc & Biotin?
VITALITY Curcumin
The word 'Vitality' conveys how we think of this product. It’s our ever-popular pineapple lime water-soluble curcumin, which is known for its potent anti-inflammatory effects, combined with 3 new ingredients: Vitamins D3, B12 and Biotin.
Vitamin D3 is a fat-soluble vitamin. It’s ordinarily produced by our own bodies from cholesterol, via a complex process involving sunlight exposure. The problem is that many people simply aren’t able to get enough sun-exposure and are at risk of Vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D is essential for dietary calcium absorption from the gut and calcium, in turn, is critical for a variety of physiological processes including the function of muscles, the brain and the immune system. Getting enough Vitamin D is now much simpler with Truth Origins Vitality (or for a super dose, try Truth Origins SHINE). As with all of our products, our Vitamin D is 100% from plant sources, in this case from lichen.
Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin that is ordinarily found in foods such as liver, milk, fish and meat (not much good if you’re a vegan!). B12 absorption requires something called “intrinsic factor” which is produced by the stomach. Unfortunately, inadequate gastric acid secretions or antibodies to intrinsic factor leads to B12 deficiency – and this is estimated to be up to 10% of the population, depending on age.
While severe B12 deficiency causes neurological disease and anaemia, even subtle B12 deficiency is associated with dementia and low cognitive function. This is why we’ve added B12 into Vitality.
Biotin (also called Vitamin B7) got its name from the word “bios”, which was used to describe a number of growth factors found in yeast. In fact, Biotin has gone by a number of names, including my personal favourite, “protective factor x” (because it protected against a type of dermatosis and loss of hair in animals that was associated with the intake of raw egg whites).
Biotin is found in a variety of plants including egg-yolk, soybeans and yeast. It’s absorbed in the small intestine and is an essential co-factor for carbohydrate, amino acid, and lipid metabolism. Biotin deficiency isn’t common, but when it does occur it’s a catastrophe, giving rise to dermatitis, hair loss, lethargy, muscle soreness, confusion and hallucinations. Biotin deficiency is one of the things tested for in newborns.
SHIELD Vitamin C
Now is a great time to be doing everything you can to maintain normal immune function. Trent and I are proud to have upgraded our Vitamin C – which itself is essential for immunity as well as normal skin function and development – with the addition of Vitamin D3 and Biotin.
FOCUS Omegas
Focus has now optimised its Omega blend with DHA, B12 & Zinc. My interest in the omega fatty acids dates back to 1996 and the start of my Masters degree, when I began studying the effect of dietary omega-3 fatty acids on the development of the brain and visual system. I subsequently spent a decade (yep, I did my Ph.D. and 3 post-doctoral fellowships) investigating how these essential fats are involved in a significant number of physiological processes including the control of body weight and blood pressure.
An unusually high proportion of the phospholipids of the grey matter of the brain contain docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) – and DHA is heavily recycled, indicating that this molecule is critical to neural function. Unfortunately, our bodies can’t synthesise DHA from scratch. We can either consume DHA directly (the best-known source of DHA is fatty fish and fish oil) or we can consume its precursors.
We have completely upgraded Truth Origins Omegas through the addition of DHA from algal sources. We’ve also optimised the omega 3 to omega 6 ratio to 3:1.
Zinc is a trace element that is crucial for human health. Its importance is basically on par with iron, as reflected in the fact that there are similar amounts of zinc and iron stored in the body. Zinc is contained within about 250 proteins, many of which are key enzymes in the body. It plays a key role in gene function and cell division.
Even mild deficiency leads to a host of problems including growth retardation, sexual dysfunction, night blindness, immune dysfunction and poor healing. Zinc deficiency can arise from a number of conditions including dietary deficiency, diabetes, various anti-hypertensive drugs and excessive alcohol consumption. Mild zinc deficiency appears to be common. Individuals in resource-limited countries are at risk of zinc deficiency because the diet is relatively low in zinc and contains significant amounts of phytates (which reduce zinc absorption).
There is some evidence supporting the role of zinc supplementation to increase growth velocity in children, and several studies have suggested a benefit of zinc supplementation in children. Zinc supplementation during pregnancy for women with mild zinc deficiency appears to promote foetal growth and reduce the risk of premature birth and infant diarrhoea. Zinc has also been used to treat the common cold, but its clinical value is still unclear. We are proud of this addition to our blend!
We hope you love our new blends as much as we do!
